Thumbs up It Runs!

A few days ago I got my hotside pipes back from the welder they turned out good! I painted the pipes and installed them and ran the oil lines to the turbo. After a 10 hour day in the garage it runs! The only issues I had was with a torn bowl screw gasket on the carb and a tiny oil leak at the turbo pressure line inlet. I found a gasket in my toolbox and reefed down on the fitting and all was good!

The car is quiet with a slight rumble out of the exhaust, I didnt know what to expect but it still has the slight cam sound to it. I was worried that it would sound like a ups truck like the folks on ttf forums say. I couldnt hear the turbo at all but when I tacked it up and let off the bov would open and I would hear a whistle sound, so something is going on in there. I tried a brake torque and couldnt get lower than 5 in. vacuum, the M/T's were spinning I didnt want to drive through the back of the garage! The road test will have to wait because the weather is crap around here 40 and rain.

Very nice! I did the garage burnout too! At about 0-1 pounds of boost I thought I might drive through the back wall too! LOL....The tires were spinning so hard with the 2.73 gear that it felt like the car was hovering!!!
And the coolest part was that it happened in a heartbeat...going from restrained idle against the foot brake to screaming banshee in about 1.3 milliseconds!! Almost to fast to react! My older longtime drag racing buddy was ear to ear grinning impressed with the way the car responded... His response was "Your gonna kick ass and take names!"

I dont have a video camera but when I get it dialed in I have a buddy that will record it. If the weather ever breaks! We had 5in. of snow last week.

The flex is from summit. The inside is convoluted the stuff you dont want is inner wire mesh. I seen some ugly pictures on ttf of what the inner wire can do to a turbo!

thanks for the note about summit
Do you remember if you bought the summit brand or the pacesetter brand on there?
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Both say they have a 'corrugated inner tubing'
is that the inner tube we want? They don't show a picture of the inner tubing and i haven't wanted to 'test' them by ordering a couple

I used this one...

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Just a note on that, the center joint is the only part that is stainless! the inlet tubes are mild steel. The one I used is also a 2.25 not 2.5

i bought two from mandrel bending solutions ( by far the best prices on the net) they did have the wire mesh inside but its ridiculously easy to remove which i did.
EDIT: they have the best prices on mandrel elbows not necessarily the flex joints. i bought 5 90 degree elbows, 3 45s, one of those big pieces that have a 45 and then a "U" just incase i needed something goofy and 2 flex joints all in 2.5 pipe and shipped to me it was like 175

The turbo stays! lol. When I pulled the blower intake is when I made up my mind. I am going to get some race gas and tune it on the street like all the other junk I have built. I have to re-program the msd box (8977) boost curve and verify that it is pulling timing. I also need to check the pressure regulator to make sure it is working properly. I did check all the functions when I installed the blower last fall so I shouldnt have a problem. The weather forcast for around here for the weekend is sunny and temps in the 50's
test & tune time!

yup, video required

I bet a lot of people will be copying this design - makes it nice...not having to deal with custom exhaust manifolds

well done

Talking We have boost!!

Took the car out for the maiden voyage today and everything went great! The turbo spools very fast, sounds like a little jet! and the bov is loud as hell!
The wastegate spring is kinda weak the first drive gave a 4psi reading I cranked the adjustment all the way down and only got 5psi. Then I took the gate apart and stretched the spring and managed to get 6psi. I stoped there. Im thinking this light spring will work good for a homemade boost controller.

The carb which I was worried about worked good. Idle a/f ratio is 14. part throttle/cruise is 13.5 and wot is around 12.0 I did not have any lean tip in problems. If I mash the throttle sometimes I get a slight hesitation I need to work on that. I tried to fatten up the secondary jets up to 92's but I didnt see much change.I think vent tube extentions may be in my future when I turn up the boost. So far Ive driven about 60 miles and Im very happy with this setup!

We had a Deal on some video I beleive!!!

I had my bird out today too playing with the vent tube extensions.
Its down to 72 74s without PV's and its still going 10.00 under boost.
It cleaned up considerbly form the 80's I had i it but I can't believ I am down this far from my 98 jets that were going lean.
I am going to put 70 72's in it tomorrow and see where things are.
I even emailed Brent over at Tstangs because I couldn't believe I was that far down on a big inch motor like this.

He had some Ideas for the future that we discussed and Once I get running correctly on this I will start messing it up again.

Throttle response is unreal until the boost comes in then It breaks up ad fall all ver itself.

Its was shutting off completely with the 80's in it.

I am happy to see your up and running.

Also happy the S400 worked out as I was worried about that one.
I wish you were closer and we could do some back to back testing with the TV's and the S400.

It'd be nice to see some back to backs on the two.
