Default S400 Build

I picked this up a few weeks ago, its a borg warner s400 with a 1.32 ar. This will be going on a 462. I have figured out the turbo placement and rigged up a bracket to hold it in place. Im still in the planning stages but would like to get the hotside done this winter. I plan on using stock log manifolds and run 2.25 pipe under the car forward to just before the radiator, then merge the pipes into the turbo. Here is some pictures...

I can't get over how big that turrbo looks! What do you have for the rest of your motor combo?

Looks good! Keep the photos coming!

The motor has self ported 6x-4's and dished speed pro forged pistons. Im running 8.7-1 compression. I am using head studs with fel pro 1016 gaskets. In the bottom end, 455 block .030 over, stock crank .010 under and scat h-beam rods. The cam is a summit 2802 with 1.65 rockers.

The car runs very well now with the b&m 174 but I am building the turbo project for a few years down the road. I have 3 years of street driving on this motor and about 8,000 miles, only about 500 miles with the mini blower. The motor is in good shape right now if it still is after next summer I may use it, if not I have a shed full of old Pontiac iron and will build another
Im looking to build a fun street car! dont really care about the dragstrip.

That looks great. I think the turbo is basically the same as the TV series as far as physical size no sure how the wheels compare.

As long as the 1.32 housing works out he car will fly.

The whole thing sounds like a nice well thought out plan and it should really cook.

Good luck.
Don't drag your feet I am dying for some results around here.

100% identical to mine except im using 2.5 crossover. are you afraid to choking it with the 2.25? also how is that push-lock style hose working for you?

Looks good, I have a S400 on its way to my house as I type this.
I am planning to put the turbo in the same place in a 68 Firebird, looks like it will fit. Good luck with the project. Did you get the $192 install kit?
What wastegate are you going to use?

I did alot of searching on turbo mustangs about the x-over size. For the power level I am wanting I dont think it will hurt me too much(650-700hp) I measured the exit on the log manifolds its around 2in. I may open it to 2.25 and I dont see where I can open it any more?? I dont see where putting a larger pipe after a restriction will help things? But I am open to suggestions Im no turbo expert!

I like the push lock style hose and I will probably never use braided again!

Yes I bought the install kit, it came with the oil fittings, v-band clamps and a t6 flange with gaskets.

I dont have a wastegate yet, but I thinkin at least 50mm maybe 60 ?? I have some research to do on that one.

thats good news on the push lock its alot cheaper! but i did read a story where it failed and burned a car to the ground! i too am using manifolds and was debating the 2.25 vs 2.5 and i also did alot of research on turbomustangs and most of those guys are using 2.5 with only 300 something cubes. i have the room for 2.5 so im using it.
i have a racegate on ebay!! check it out if your interested http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Turbo...spagenameZWDVW sorry for the link if the modertor has a problem with it!!

This seems to be a good place to share info! Damn, I didnt think there would be this many turbo people here!

When i upgraded my fuel system for the mini blower I just upgraded for a blowthrough. I used a stock tank sumped, 10an feed to a a-1000 pump 8an supply and return through a aeromotive 13202 regulator.

for ignition I have a 6al with a msd 8977 timing controller, has start and boost retard functions.

Cool

What didtributor are you running with the boost retard.
Any rotor phasing issues?

TR6 what made you make the switch to the switzer?

My supplier didn't have very much good to say about that turbo and he sells them.

I will be interested to see the difference if any especially if thats all your changing.

I am not changing the turbo on my TR6 still using the T88 upgraded TV7512
I believe the S400 is a Borg/Warner turbo.
My son wants to put a turbo on my 68 Firebird and another friend wants to set up a turbo on a Lemans, so I ordered a S400 to check it out. These are supposed to be modern turbo designs and the one I ordered should pump 98 lbs of air a minute.
I also have a buddy that wants to help me build some turbo kits and this turbo may fit the goals well.

Oh I thought u were switching. Thats too bad a back to back comparison would have been nice.

It will still be nice to see how it works out.

You should post some pics of the bird.

IF its as nice as the TR6 I am sure We'll all like it.

I am running a msd distributer locked at 32 deg. I pull timing back to 26 deg at 6psi with the blower. Rotor phasing you got me on that one! all I can tell you is the ignition has no drivability problems.

Is it a large cap distributor?

I had major rotor phasing issues with my mallory.

Small cap jumps to the wrong pin in the dist. Makes a big bang.
MSD dist can be rotor phased to compensate. Mallory cannot unfortunately I am so tight to the firewall I can't fit the big cap.
