Default 1968 Firebird question

My nephew just bought a '68 Firebird. He asked me to help him find out some information about it. I know a lot about the first gen camaros but not the firebirds.
Here is what he has:
1968 Firebird coupe
6 cylinder with 4 barrel carb
4 speed
Dual exhaust
He wanted to know how many 6 cyl, 4 speed cars were produced?
I'll probably be posting the cowl tag information when I get it. For help in decoding it.
Thanks for any help.

By the way I'm new to this site. Looks pretty cool!
I remember the first car I fell in love with. I was 15yrs old and a guy at my high school had a '68 Firebird, marina blue with centerline wheels, big tires on the back that stuck out beyond the fenders (old school style, 1984). From that moment on I knew I wanted a first gen f-body car. Just so happened my first and second cars were both '69 camaros.

what really makes that car rare is the OHC 6 with the 4 barrel. the 4 speed adds to it though. it was called a "sprint 6"

my Firebird was a sprint 6 car originally, and i knew the guy who owned it about 10 years before i did, and he pulled the 6, and dropped in a small block chevy to end up being a 12 second car....i remember him telling me that he threw the 4 barrel setup in the garbage.

after i got the car, i put in a 400 Pontiac with a 700R4.

if my car would have had the original parts, i would have kept it that way....i'd recommend your nephew keep his that way too. at least hang onto the stuff.

that car should run very well....i had another '67 Bird with an OHC 6 1 barrel with 3 on the tree....that car would bark 2nd gear at any time, and on the right surface, would get 3rd.

the 4 barrel version uses a slightly bigger cam....it is also basically the same thing as a chevy 6 shortblock with a high tech top end.....i believe the '68 is a 250ci - a 292ci truck block is supposed to fit.

Welcome to the Zone Glenn,

The books I have dont have a break down on the engine/model combo. There were 90,152 coupes made in 68 an 16,960 drop tops.

The engine codes for 6 cyl w/4bbl are

ZD-250 ci I-6 4bbl 215 hp
ZE-250 ci I-6 4bbl 225 hp

If these dont match your cowl tag I can decode the tag for you.

Those little OHC motor can be made to run pretty hard!
Try these guys if you're looking for some performance out of that OHC.
http://primatechmotorsports.com/ Quenton, one of the guys who owns the company is an awesome guy to deal with has been an active member over at www.firstgenfirebird.org for many years!
As a Sprint 6 it's still a good performer and a rare-ish car!

Good Luck with the car it sounds like it should be a lot of fun!

Default Yeah Buddy

You have a very desireable car just from a collector's standpoint because most people hack those cars up to drop a V8 into them.If it was a 70' or later I6 car I would say hack it up but you have something special there with a late sixties Sprint.
With the right suspension parts, brakes and a good 4speed gearbox they make terrific slalom cars.Good power balance with less tendency to overpower the rear tires in corners.
The 67's and possibly some of the early 68's came with the 230" engine and most of 68 & 1969 the displacement was increased to 250 ".
Do not put a 230" head on a 250" engine. The smaller Chamber 230 heads will create to high a CR to run street gasoline with flat top pistons. Race only it is OK.
That engine when fresh can rev to 7000 rpm because of the overhead cam.
If high revs will be constantly achieved lighter rotating assy parts are in order.
The Pontiac OHC6 can be stroked out past 300" by using a modified Chevy 292 truck six crank.
My current everyday ride is a Ford truck with a 300+" Ford six in it.
With just minor bolt ons and a cam change it flies. We jokingly refer to it as "The Other 5.0". so if that thing can wake up with just minor mods....
you can make huge power with a Pontiac 6 especially if you go turbo.
Nissan dominated in SCCA sports car classes for a few years with their 2.4 and 2.8 liter overhead cam straight sixes in "Z" cars and those are small engines in comparison to the Pontiac OHC 6.
There is a board called "Pontiac Overhead Cam Six Forum" but I do not have the link to it here.Lots of good tech info and discussion going on there about this much overlooked Pontiac engine.
And do indeed check out the Primatech website.

I'll ask admin if he can put it into the PZ links section when it gets back up and running.
