Default Anybody raced Pontiacs longer than Wangers?

Pictures are of Jim winning S/S at the '60 NHRA Nationals. And I think he's still racing today, isn't he- the Ponte Carlo?

He owns the car.
Don't believe he's doing the driving chores.

I would guess that Jim hasn't actually raced himself for twenty years or more. Robert Johnson has been driving the Ponte for quite a few years, and before that Ed DuFrene drove the Ponte and before the Ponte Ed drove the red Trans Am.

And before that he street raced in Michigan I think he told me once. From what Ed has stated that's how Jim & him hooked up way back.

But don't quote me. I'm old too. LOL.

Yeah, when I posted this, I didn't realize how long since Wangers drove on the track. But his "active involvement" with Pontiacs has sure spanned a lot of years.

I've since learned that Terry Spidel first raced Pontiacs in 1961 and is still doing it. Anybody challenge him for the title??

I think you might be right about Arnie. I believe he raced a 58 Chieftain in 58 & did very well with it, & a 59 in 59.

yes, Arnie Beswick did

also Smokey Yunick, started running a Pontiac in NASCAR during the late 1950's, before Wangers was involved- but Smokey realized NASCAR racing was all about high rpm and airflow, and small crank journals- so when the new Chevy Mystery Motor (prototype BBC) came out in 1963, Smokey went to Chevy that year

Jim has always said, "Why waste a good car on an old man. These guys can run the cars better than I ever did."
