I'm don't know as much as I should about the 301 Pontiac engine , but can someone tell me if or which intake can be used as a better intake , or if you can use a different set of heads on the 301 & then if there is an intake that will work on it. I'm thinking about maybe building a 301 to put in a car just to drive. I know the bottom end from the turbo is a better bottom end & is forged?? I think so would want that as a start, & then go from there. I can have a friend make an intake out of a few different ones if I have to but would rather be able to use / buy something to bolt on , but would maybe like to use some different heads if . I'm not sure about the stock 301 heads or if they are any good or not. I want to build an engine that is Pontiac, a 301 for size, displacement so I will be able to get better gas mileage. I have had friends who had a few 301's & they got great gas mileage so thats my thinking. Any other ideas ??? Thanks Rex.

Im no expert on 301s and I'm going from memory , The problem with the 301 is that they removed counter balance weights from the crank. That and the exhaust ports were very tiny square ports. I don't know if the bolt pattern of the heads is interchangeable with others or not, There are some good older articles on the 301 out there. I believe almost any issue with an engines architecture can be overcome question is how hard you are willing to work to solve its shortcomings.

I think a stout 301 would be a real attention getter because it's rarely is ever done. Kind of like Charlie's 4 cyl project.

It went ok. I only got two passes in.

First pass I smoked the tires off the line, peddled it and it hooked up. Then lifted at about 1000 Ft and coasted because a warning light came on.
Went 10.30 @ 131.

Warning was for AFR hitting 13:1.

Went up two jets all the way around. Next pass I had a complete brain fart. They had the tree set to Pro tree. When the bottom yellow came i let off the transbrake. Only 2 lbs boost. Still had a 1.88 60 Ft.
Went 10.17 @130. Only made 7 lbs boost on this pass. Found that I didnt tighten clamp where charge pipe connects to carb hat.

I wanted to go up another jet size and when I was putting float bowls back on I stripped out one of the float bowl bolts.

That was the end of the night. But at least I got a beer early.

Put a Helicoil in the main body and its back together. Just need to find time get back to the track.

Well that's running nicely 😀👍.

Sounds like it'll be in the 9s easy once it's hooked up and sorted out.

so far I am happy with the new cam. It didn't seem any harder to get it to spool up and pulled good to 6300 RPM. I just need to get it back to the track and sort the issues.

I don't know if I'll achieve my goal of 9.20 @ 150 on pump gas with DOT approved radial tires and a full exhaust on the car but its gonna be fun trying.

Hard launch, get theb 60ft down and you might who knows. . 1 tenth out front is 3 tenths out back so thats the place to focus if ET iis your goal. Now MPH is a function of horse power so that may need a turn of the boost knob and/or leaner meaner tuning. You know what happens if it gets too lean though.

I'll bet you can get it down to the 9.90s just with seat time and a lot of passes based on your description of how it went.

My car always pulled good to 6600, but I shift it at 5800 because that where it runs best.

Took the TA out for a track trip a few weeks ago. Boost was low and no matter what I did it just got lower on each pass. Couldn't see anything obvious.

Got home and removed plumbing from turbo to carb hat. Everything looked fine. Impeller spins nice and easy. No visible damage anywhere. While reinstalling the connector to the outlet of the turbo I noticed the turbo move just a tiny bit. Found 2 of the 4 flange bolts stripped. Guess I got a little overzealous when I tightened them last. Replaced all 4 bolts/nuts and hope that is all the issue was. Gonna try another test and tune tomorrow night.
