Default 3408 Twin Turbo

I haven't posted here or anywhere in a long time. My job has kept me away from the internet and working on Pontiac's. I know you guys will have the answer to this question though. A Youtube friend has a question for you turbo enthusiast out there. The question is, will a twin turbo set up, with the hot side of the turbo's in parallel and the cold side being in series, be better, the same or worst than a twin turbo setup with the hot side and cold side series? This is going to be a setup on a 3408 Caterpillar engine in a tandem axle race truck. He's wanting to get 1500 hp and more. Hope you guys can help. Thx

Here's a link to his Youtube video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTGMeIDe1hI

I should say here that he is looking at trying to diminish turbo lag and have crisp throttle response. Thx again

Have him go buy the latest issue of Hot Rod Magazine, November '09. On page 32 is a crazy twin sequential turbo Cummins diesel in a '28 Dodge truck. The turbos are run in, what I would call, reverse sequential, for lack of a better term.

We'll call them Turbo A and Turbo B. Turbo A is "first" in the exhaust stream and it's turbine outlet runs into Turbo B turbine inlet. The Turbo B turbine outlet is the downpipe (or in the case of this crazy-ass truck, an outlet stack sticking straight up into the air!) NOW, the reverse part... the air filter is on Turbo B compressor inlet and it's compressor discharge goes into compressor A inlet. Compressor A discharge goes into the l-a intercooler and to the throttle body.

Turbo A and B appear to have similar/same compressor housings, though there is no mention of wheel sizes. Turbo A has a relatively smaller turbine housing and Turbo B has a big huge turbine housing.

Oh, and it makes 105psi boost.............

Thanks f/ the advice...I've been trying to get as much info on this
set up as possible. I am familiar with the ACERT program from Cat
& 1/2 of what I have aere is from them. This is an experimental
project for me, I was told Cummins had used thid design on the KTA
450-750's...& if so, I wanted to know how it would respond on Cat's
big 3408 V-8. Please stay in touch if you find any new developments.

I'm the SteelKahuna on YouTube, & I submitted this to YouTube viewers including a guy w/Banks...the Banks guy never got back to me as of yet,
but I'm pleased there are others who will @ least try to give me an answer.
I'm no threat to anyone as far as turbocharging goes, I just want to build
one pro comp pulling rig to be able to say I built 1. Whether or not I win is
not the point...the point is "will it work???" I just want to know from others what they know aout turbocharging & make friends along the way...

I'm sure most of us would be willing to help, if we had any expertise to share...

but there's only 10 or 20 of us on here total...and noone with anything close to what you're thinking

Try the turbo mustangs forum
If anyone can help, or point in the right direction...it'd be over there

how did I miss this thread?

I have been wanting to build something like this for a long time but have had my hands full with my combo. theres lots of info out there on this just dig around and you'll uncover a ton of it.

The main reason for stacked turbos is higher boost numbers and gas engines just diont survive up that high. There are guys doing this on Deisel truck resource though. check that out.

The info I provided is similar to how an ac compressor cools the charge. Kind of an alternative to running a conventional intercooler alone. Wish I had some sizing info.

If Banks isnt talking maybe BullyDog knows something?

I've just recently peeked at some of the diesel stuff. Eye opening. I saw a post searching out Holset info. The 2003-2004.5 5.9 cummins can hit 32 psi by 2200 rpm. I never realized they ran that kind of boost let alone be able to spool that quick. I'm considering two of those turbos for my 360 cid project. Impressive wide flow map. Probably need changes to the waste gates(or extra) but I'll be keeping my eyes open for a pair.
