Default Steering gear

Does anyone know if a power steering gear from a 79 firebird will fit in a 65 Lemans that already has power steering?

Yes , it will go in OK but you do have to change your P.S. line ends which is easy as the end that are on the T/A have a different fitting that has an O-ring fitting on the. The return line is like all , it just is a cut piece of hose that will go on the pump end. I'm not sure on it if you will have an O-ring fitting on the gear end or not. Either way do the gear swap is easy , but if you can find one I'd go with an 86-87 gear out of a Firebird or T/A either one with the fast rate gear for a T/A is much better. I used an 87 T/A gear in my 68 bird & man what a difference that made. Made me think I was in a new car. Plus it bolt right in to with the line ends changed to work with it.

Yes the pressure line is an easy fix. I'm mostly worried if the 65 Lemans pittman arm will fit the 79 gear, shaft size and splines.

I heard there was some issue with internal stops with the third gen gears.

There is they seem to go to far right & left, but you can solve that by , as I said in the last post get one from a 86-89 F-body , Firebird or camaro. Best is from a Trans Am or Iroc they have the quicker steering gear which makes for a far better driver then you can expect. Again my 68 bird was like driving a complete different car.

You won't have the turning radius with the 3rd Gen steering box in a 65. The 3rd Gen have a shorter wheelbase. I have a WS6 steering box and a Grand Cherokee box. Supposedly the Grand Cherokee steering box has the right turning radius.

Supposedly the steering stops are in the end caps. Its been a long time since I took a Saginaw steering box apart. They have to be put back together perfect or they start binding up after you drive them a little ways.
