Default pontiac 557 400 block

Hello, I am looking to put together a pontiac 400 engine. I have 2 blocks, and unfortunately both are the weaker 557 code smog engine blocks. Do I dare build one of these with a power goal of 400 hp in mind? Ill be sticking with the 3.75 stroke if that matters. If I decide to proceed, what mods should I make to improve its survivability? Main studs would be on the list, and I was wondering if filling the block might be beneficial? I'd love to find a better block, but the damn things are pretty rare in my area it seems.

with a stock stroke you should be good.Have the roll pins changed to solid dowels.Keep everything as light as you can afford.Have it magged first.Tom

Agreed. Under 500 HP, they're fine. The "5-bolt" (mounting pattern) seems to be a cleaner casting.

I stick to 400hp and less. I have a killer bottom fill that does help main cap walk and movement. Just check the block for cracks in the main webbing area and between the main and cam oil feed holes.
