Default 1955 Starchief Custom Catalina

This thread will detail the last 5 years of work that have gone into restoration of my 1955 Starchief.

The car was purchased in July 2000 from the original owner in Georgia. The owner was given the car by his father when it was purchased new in October of 1954 and was going to be handed down to his son, but unfortunatley he was killed in a road accident the christmas of 1998,so he offered it to both his granddaughter and grandson but neither wanted it so the car was put up for sale.

The car arrived in the UK December 2000, this was the first time that i had seen the car in real life. The car looked fairly straight so i booked it in for an MOT test (Vehicle saftey check that every vehicle over 3 years old has to pass each calender year) The car failed this test on brakes, brake lines, wheel bearings, king pins and steering box.

I never meant for the restoration to be a complete body off but after a couple of weekends i had a warehouse with the car in about 2000 pieces. The following pictures show the restoration over the last 5 years.

The bodywork starts with the baking of the body to remove all old paint, lead and bondo. The process is very simple the whole body is placed into a large oven and the temperature is bought upto 600˚F and back down over a 24 hour period. Due to the slow build up in heat very little distortion takes place unlike some bead blasting which can cause panel warp.

Once the body was baked, it was then sanded with 80 grit back to silver before the major bodywork was started
