Default 97 gran am timing chain tensioner?

Do you suppose to pump up(prime) the chain tensioner? I'm afraid it might jump time before it builds oil pressure or is that normal to have that much slack before starting. 4cyl dohc. Thanks, Randy

Im sure this has been answered...............but.
THere is a small hole in the tensioner, you must insert a small pick type tool and push down, this will "release the tensioner" the tool must stay inserted while the tensioner is installed, and the chain is put on.
once the chain, and all guides are in place, remove the pick from the tensioner and the tensioner will snap into place..........or go to the dealer and buy a new one...........it will have a fancy clip installed already.
