Default beginner paint

I was reading about the kirker paint and then went to their website is it a good paint for a beginner to use? Thanks,Cliff H

Cranky here knows first hand about how it sprays, because he's used it. I plan to use it soon. From what I hear, it's a good paint for almost any level of experience, but when cranky gets here, he can tell you more. :ax

There are several threads around here were we have talked about Kirker paint pretty extensively. You might want to check those out too Cliff. :ax And still feel free to ask whatever you want though.

The most important part of many of these high end "show quality" paint jobs is the color sanding and polishing process. Not the actual painting. Once a paint is flattened with the sand paper, and polished out, it looks 20 times better. This is why I've never been one to spend a ton of money on paint. The real artwork comes after the paint has dried.

Great I'm not looking for show car paint just a good paint job that I can learn to do myself,I have some bodywork I need to do and I'm learning as I go I guess that the reason I got a cheap little car like my ventura before moving up to a Trams am or formula later.Kirker has the color I want they have 7 shades of white and sometype of black stripe.Thanks for the advice I will continue reading the post

Uhh...
As a person that does do "show quality" paint work..
There really is a lot more involved to make a high quality paint job.
The actual spraying of the product is the least complicated part.
But you are right about one thing...
The final cut and rub will dictate how the car will look..

Cutting and rubbing magnifies EVERY flaw in the base by about 200%

the flatter the paint, the more it reflects the flaws.

As far as paint prices go....
Some Urethanes are definitely better then others.. just go in the store with thinking about what you want the car to look like...

From what I hear...
For the daily driver... kirker is a good paint to use...

If you're going to be spraying a metallic color... definitely go 2 stage

Spraying clear on a solid color is tricky.
Applied too soon, and the color bleeds into the clear.
Too late, and the clear can "delaminate" over time from the sun.
The darker the color, the more critical delamination becomes

Seems to me that cutting and rubbing takes out more flaws than it magnifies. Unless I have yet to create such flaws, I don't know what you're trying to say.

I learned how to paint with PPG and house of kolors. First time i did a 3 stage, which kicked my ass bad. It was alot of work to do. All the flash time and the what not's. I think the hardest part for me was the cutting and buffing. that **** takes forever and I like **** done perfect. If I can pay marty enough that he will paint my car or help me out I will do it. By the time i get around to ainbt my car I hope I can pull off a show car type piant job. I'm so picky that i cant have any flaws. I will cut and buff areas that wont even be seen, just because it will drive me crazy.


marty is a kick ass painter. I wish I lived close to him, I would love to learn from the master him self. Maybe amrty could even guide us to a good paint book to learn more about the secrets to doing a great paint job.

When I talk flaws...
I'm talking tire patches, waves.. wow's.. etc.
For a car to be completely cut and rubbed flat..
You need to be able to lay your face againts the body, and look down, and not see a single ripple or wave reflecting back at you..

What's good enough for most painters...
Isn't even a starting point for what I consider ready to paint..
Hate to brag....
But I'm constantly being told...
One of my "bad" paint jobs.....
Is better then most painters "high end" job

Here's a couple of pics of what I consider a "mediocore" paint job I did for a friend.
Total of 2 weekends body work( including patch panels) and 1 day to shoot the car

Nor does my car sit in a garage
A car doesn't have to be a "garage/trailer Queen" to win at a car show...

I'm pretty mellow about most things...
But when it comes to what I consider a "show quality" paint job...
I get pretty anal...
Probably one of the reasons that I'm asked to be a judge at a car show next month.

I'll be the first to admit..
That Pontiac "Purist" hate my car... and have been placed because of it..

But I've also built enough cars for folks to take trophies home with..
That I like to think that I know what I'm talking about

Do these flaws you're talking about show up in specific colors or what. More so in darker or lighter? Maybe I'm just not as experienced, but I'm still lost as to what you are saying.
