Taking one of his examples..
n1 = (.028 / 2)^2 * pi
What's going on there is you're calculating the area of a hole that's .028 in diameter. The formula for the area of a circle is the radius (which is half the diameter  .028/2 in this case) "squared" ( to the 2nd power, or ^2) times the value of pi (3.1415926535....).
